The project aim was to enable the utilization of an available server farm consisting of Apple Xserve servers running Mac-OS version 10.5 and Hewlett Packard Blade servers running openSuSE version 11.1 for image processing of multi-dimensional MR data. It is possible to define certain image processing tasks on single slices instead of processing a whole volume at a time. We wanted to combine data partitioning and job scheduling to accelerate time consuming image processing and data analyzing tasks by distributing them to a computer cluster based on a heterogeneous hardware and differing operating systems.

serverfarmAdditionally parallell distributet EM field simulations of new MR coils are done by CST Studio using the computer cluster. A part of the cluster is configured to run the MATLAB Distributed Computing Service for calculating biometrical statistics. Besides the serverfarm, the PC pool of the department with its 26 PCs with 4 CPUs each is also used to run computations. If there are no educational courses, the computers are utilized to capacity with computations from 3D Studio Max, SAS or MATLAB.
